Glossary
Opposition is one of the fundamental concepts in chess endgames.
- Kd5
- Kf5 — If White tries to go in a different direction.
- Kd7 — The Black king stands opposite the White king to maintain opposition.
- Kf7 — Black maintains the opposition.
- e5
- Ke7 — The only correct move. Otherwise the White king will occupy a square on the 6th rank in front of the pawn - this is always a win. Exception: the rook pawns 'a' and 'h'.
- Kd8 — A blunder that allows White to occupy a square on the 6th rank.
- Ke8 — Another way to lose in this position.
- e6
- Kd6 — White wins.

- Kd6 — White wins.

- Ke8 — The Black king retreats to e8 in order to answer Kd6 by taking the opposition again.
- Kd6
- Kd8 — Occupying the vertical opposition.
- e7+
- Ke8
- Ke6 — Stalemate.
